Distance: 21.9 miles (round-trip)
Travel Time: 3.5 - 4 hours
Ride Level: Intermediate
This ride begins and ends at the Caerphilly Visitor Centre. The first section is a short distance on NCN Route 4 (The Celtic Trail) down to Nantgarw where you join the popular Taff Trail (NCN Route 8). At Nantgarw the route then runs to Taff's Well, Tongwynlais, past Whitchurch and Llandaf, into Hailey Park, and then directly into Bute Park in Cardiff.
Special Note: This route is mostly ALL traffic-free.
Just after leaving the castle in Caerphilly, the route follows a combination of quiet roads and shared use paths as you navigate through several estates to the outskirts of town. Once you cross the A469, the path runs uninterrupted downhill for 2 1/2 miles to Taff's Well.
Entering Taff's Well and through Tongwynlais, however, there are several junctions and busy traffic circles that must be circumnavigated with caution as you weave around the A470. Use the dropped curbs and shared use pavements into Tongwynlais where you then must cycle with care down the High Street to Iron Bridge Road (approximately .5 mi.).
At the end of Iron Bridge Road bear right onto the narrow lane going past several private homes where you will then re-enter the traffic-free path. This path will lead you into a thick wooded area called "Longwood" which follows closely along side of the Taff River. The route soon opens up into Hailey Park and then finally into Bute Park. The ride ends on the western side of Bute Castle and Cowbridge Road.
The return trip is exactly as you came.
