Distance: 15.2 miles (round-trip)
Travel Time: 3 - 3.5 hours
Ride Level: Intermediate
The ride travels from Caerphilly Visitor Centre to Ynysangharad Memorial Park in Pontypridd and back. Approximately 13 miles of the ride follows traffic free walking & cycling paths. The remainder short sections are on quiet lanes. There is however; one very busy dual-carriage way crossing the A468 which involves a traffic island.
The route heads past Caerphilly Castle on NCN Route 4 (The Celtic Trail) traveling along a combination of traffic-free paths, dual-use pavements, and quiet lanes to Nantgarw. There are then a series of short "zig-zags" climbing up to the aforementioned dual-carriageway. Just after crossing over the A468; the route moves into the quiet woods and travels traffic-free along a flat railway line for the next 3.5 miles.
Exiting the traffic-free path behind The University of South Wales you will travel left-downhill, past a small traffic circle to a junction leading under the A470. Take special care turning left to follow the road leading to the underpass and immediately turn right onto the another traffic-free path.
This next path will weave along side of the A470 for approximately .5 mile until it veers left into the woods of Ynysangharad Park. After another .5 mile you will find yourself in the park proper with several different routes to follow along toward Bridge Street at the far upper end of the park.
The return trip is exactly as you came.
